About

”Jan Fridegård is one of our greatest writers and an artist with words. He depicts nature and social events as an impressionist with his special talent.”

LARS FORSELL, ROYAL SWEDISH ACADEMY OF LITERATURE

Fridegård grew up in a Swedish family of itinerant agricultural labourers (‘statare’), meaning that the family moved around the country seeking work on farms for food and lodgings.

Fridegård was a scriptwriter for the filming of his debut novel ‘One Night in July’ and for ‘When The Meadows Blossom’ (1946) and the Lars Hard trilogy (1948). In 1996, SVT Drama (Swedish Public Broadcast Television) made ‘The Tower Cockerel,’ based on the spiritual book with same name and his novel ‘The Doorway Called Narrow.’ Sections of his rich and extensive writings have been transformed into scenes in the documentary “Jan Fridegård – Wordsmith and Poet of the Slaves” (2001).

“A voice for many who live and die, hard and quietly – without the opportunity to have their words spoken.”
